Overview

TPE and silicone are both elastomers — but they serve different purposes.

TPE is a thermoplastic elastomer; silicone is a thermoset platinum-cure material. They look similar on the surface, but differ significantly in softness, stretch, detail, durability, smell, and price.

Evolova uses premium TPE across our electric torso lineup — not because it's perfect in every category, but because it objectively wins on the factors that matter most for products you'll touch, move, and use regularly: feel, flexibility, weight, and value. We also acknowledge where silicone genuinely excels, and we're developing silicone + electric models for the future.

Start with the comparison chart below, then read why we made our choice.

TPE vs Silicone — Side-by-Side Comparison

Seven factors that matter most when choosing a torso material.

Why Evolova Uses TPE

An honest look at why premium TPE is the right foundation for electric torsos.

Evolova BioFlex TPE body softness and material structure

Every Evolova torso is built on premium TPE with BioFlex Skin™ layering — not because TPE wins every category, but because it wins the categories that matter most for interactive electric torsos used regularly.

1. Feel comes first

TPE's elasticity exceeds ordinary silicone. Its softness can be tuned far lower on the Shore scale, and different zones can be engineered with different densities — softer where you want give, firmer where you need structure. For a product meant to be held, moved, and experienced — not just displayed — that tactile realism is essential.

2. Stretch and everyday poseability

TPE typically stretches 6–8× versus silicone's 3–5×. That extra flexibility means more natural movement and fewer worries during repositioning. Silicone can tear if stressed without proper care; TPE is more forgiving in daily use.

3. Weight and handling

TPE is lighter and easier to lift, store, and reposition — especially important for torso-format products in apartments or solo setups. Less weight also means less strain during cleaning and maintenance.

4. Value without compromise

Silicone raw materials cost several times more than TPE. For Evolova, investing in Evo™ suction, vibration, and pulse technology — rather than paying a silicone premium on every unit — delivers a better overall experience per dollar for most customers.

5. Built for use, not just display

Industry experience aligns with our choice: full-TPE builds are widely used where practical daily function matters most. Silicone excels as a display material; TPE excels as a living, interactive material. Evolova is designed for the latter.

We are transparent about silicone's advantages in detail fidelity, odorlessness, and long-term aging — and we are actively developing silicone + electric models for customers who want both. Today, TPE is the best-balanced choice for our core lineup.

Material Science — What's Actually Different?

Both are elastomers, but they behave very differently at the molecular level.

TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer)

TPE is based on SEBS — a hydrogenated form of SBS block copolymer. By adjusting SEBS molecular weight, oil content, and PP ratio, manufacturers can dial in virtually any softness needed. TPE is high-strength, high-rebound, injection-moldable, non-toxic, and easy to color. It can be reprocessed and molded into complex shapes — ideal for torsos with varied zone densities.

A simple identification test: when burned, TPE produces dark smoke and leaves an oily black residue — similar to plastic.

Platinum-Cure Silicone

Doll-grade silicone uses addition-cure platinum liquid silicone, mixed 1:1 and cured at room temperature. It is non-toxic, odorless, and highly aging-resistant. Silicone's molecular density is greater than TPE — under magnification, TPE looks porous like a sponge, while silicone is far more compact.

That density is why silicone holds finer surface detail and resists aging better — but also why it feels firmer and costs more. Burn test: silicone produces white smoke and leaves a pale ash.

What this means for you

Neither material is "better" in absolute terms. TPE trades some micro-detail and heat resistance for softness, stretch, and affordability. Silicone trades softness and cost for detail precision and long-term stability. Evolova chose TPE because our products are engineered for immersive, repeated use — not shelf display.

Where Silicone Genuinely Wins

We believe in honest comparisons — here's what platinum silicone does better.

Silicone is not the wrong choice — it's the right choice for different priorities. Here's where it objectively outperforms TPE:

  • Surface micro-detail: Silicone's firmer, denser structure reproduces fine hand lines, pores, and skin texture more convincingly. TPE captures overall realism well, but loses some micro-detail.
  • Odor: Platinum-cure silicone is essentially odorless. TPE may carry a light material scent; some products add fragrance (natural or synthetic) to mask it.
  • Heat & chemical resistance: Silicone withstands high temperatures and most acids/bases. TPE is less heat-tolerant and ages faster under harsh UV or heat exposure.
  • Long-term aging: Silicone's dense structure resists oxidation and surface degradation over years. TPE requires more consistent care to maintain its best condition.
  • Display & photography: For collectors who want a photorealistic static piece — especially portrait-level head sculpting — silicone remains the gold standard.

Some manufacturers combine both: a silicone head + TPE body pairs silicone's facial realism with TPE's body softness at a mid-range price. Evolova focuses on integrated electric torsos, which is why we optimize the full body in TPE today.

Which Build Type Is Right for You?

How different material combinations serve different purposes.

Build type Feel Detail Best for Typical price range
Full silicone Firmer Highest Display, photography, companionship as a figure Premium ($1,000+)
Full TPE Softest, most lifelike touch Good Daily interactive use — most practical choice Mid-range
Silicone head + TPE body Soft body, firm face High facial detail Balanced realism + comfort Mid-range
Evolova electric torso (TPE) Soft TPE + BioFlex Skin™ Optimized for torso format Interactive electric use — Evo™ suction, vibration, pulse Accessible premium

Our recommendation: If you want a torso you'll actually use — lift, position, clean, and enjoy regularly — TPE delivers the best balance of softness, flexibility, and value. If you're primarily buying for static display or maximum facial sculpt detail, silicone may be worth the premium.

Material FAQ

Our electric torsos are designed for regular interactive use. TPE offers superior softness, greater stretch (6–8× vs 3–5×), lighter weight, and significantly better value — while still delivering convincing realism with BioFlex Skin™. Silicone excels at static detail and long-term aging, which matters more for display pieces than for products you'll handle daily.

Yes. Evolova uses medical-grade TPE tested for safety. See our Quality Assurance page for MSDS and RoHS certification details.

TPE may carry a light material scent when new, which typically fades with airing and proper cleaning. Platinum silicone is essentially odorless. Some TPE products add fragrance to mask material scent — Evolova prioritizes material quality and proper ventilation over heavy fragrance masking.

Both are IPX7 waterproof — power off, immerse in water, wash with mild soap, air dry. Avoid oil-based lubricants on TPE. Keep away from prolonged high heat and direct UV. Silicone tolerates harsher conditions but still benefits from gentle care. Full steps in our Help Center.
